Let me ask – Is your homeschool joy gone? Are you struggling just a little bit with it all? It happens and there is no need to feel shame. Take a deep breath, shake it off and try these three things to help bring back the joy of homeschooling.

Are there more than 3? Of course! And the more personalized the better, but these three will help to ignite that spark.

REEVALUATE WHAT YOU ARE DOING

Simplify: Sometimes, less is more. Focus on core subjects and essential skills.

Adjust Your Schedule: A more flexible schedule can reduce stress and allow more time for fun, for play, for togetherness.

Rethink Your Curriculum: If your current curriculum isn’t working, consider switching. There are so many great ones out there and maybe the one you have just isn’t for you because of your children’s learning styles or your need for prep, etc.

MAKE TIME FOR LEARNING FUN

You want to make learning fun. You need to have some fun in your school day, in your life. When homeschool includes fun it will bring back joy. Here are some things you should include:

Hands-On Activities: Incorporate hands-on projects, experiments, and field trips.

Games and Puzzles: Use educational games and puzzles to make learning enjoyable.

Read Aloud: Share engaging stories and discuss them with your child.

CONNECT – WITH NATURE AND WITH EACH OTHER

You need to connect both with nature and with each other. This is important. Connecting with nature can improve mental health, amongst other great benefits.

Outdoor Learning: Spend time outdoors for nature study and fresh air. Also include a lot of outdoor free play and exploration.

Gardening: Engage in gardening activities, if you can, to learn about plants and the environment.

But don’t forget that connecting as a family is vital. You are in this together. So do it together.

Read Together: Share books and discuss them with your child. Reading together fosters not only connectedness but potentially a love of reading.

Visit Museums and Libraries: Explore educational exhibits and resources. So much fun to be had!

Encourage Curiosity: Ask open-ended questions and support your child’s interests.

Don’t let homeschool struggles get you down. You can get your homeschool joy back. If you feel stressed and burnt out it will only lead to greater frustrations, and possibly a dent in your relationships with your kids. We can turn burnout around. We don’t even have to get to burnout status.
