Co-ops and You: How to choose the right one

Homeschool co-ops can be a wonderful thing. They can bring enrichment, community, social opportunities and so much more. But how do you choose the best one for you?

Know what you want

What do you hope to achieve by joining a homeschool co-op?

Are you looking for academic enrichment? Social opportunities for your children? Support for yourself as a homeschooling parent? All of the above? There are co-ops that are more social, and then others that will teach entire subjects for you.

Also consider philosophy and approach. Different co-ops have different educational philosophies and approaches to learning and they might not align with your own beliefs and goals for your children. Do you want a religious based co-op or not?

When you know what you want, then you can start to look at the different options and easily narrow down your options.

Research Co-ops

Look for homeschool co-ops in your area and gather information about each one. There are some easy ways to do this:

  • search online
  • ask for recommendations from friends and other homeschooling families
  • attend homeschooling events or fairs where co-ops may be represented

Check out different co-ops

Take the time to check out the different co-ops that you are interested in. Many do allow families to come and check it out, or will have open houses. This way you can get a feel for the environment and culture.

You can also see what social and extracurricular opportunities there are. What are the other parents like? Could you see yourself making friends?

Take a close look at the curriculum and activities offered. Do they meet your wants? Do they align with your children’s interests and educational needs?

Talk to other parents who are part of the co-op (or may have been in the past). Ask them about their experiences, what they like and dislike about the co-op, and whether they feel it has been beneficial for their children.

Think about the practicals

It is one thing to really like a co-op but then you have to consider the practical logistics like when and where (Do you really want to drive an hour each way with young children? Maybe, if it is really worth it for you.), cost, requirements to be part of the co-op.

Co-ops really can be a great thing for your family. It really is worth considering as an option to your homeschooling life. Why not think through if it would be beneficial for you and check some out?

  1. Thanks for this glorious article. One other thing is that a lot of digital cameras are available equipped with some sort of zoom lens that enables more or less of that scene for being included by ‘zooming’ in and out. Most of these changes in {focus|focusing|concentration|target|the a**** length are generally reflected inside viewfinder and on massive display screen right on the back of the camera.
