Find Out The Truth! Debunking Homeschool Myths. (Part 1)

There are many homeschool myths and misconceptions out there! Some of them are a little laughable. Some are truly believed. And yet others can sound plausible. This is where you need to take time to research (from both sides) and be open to new ideas.

Let’s look at some of the most prevalent misconceptions and myths about homeschooling – and bring some light to them. Let’s bust them!

Homeschool children are not socialized

This is perhaps the most prevalent stereotype of homeschoolers. It is often the number one concern of family members who will ask “But will they get socialization?”

When we are used to being school focused, we feel that this is where socialization happens. But what if you were to find out that it is not? Socialization is about much more than just interacting with other children in the same age group.

A child who is homeschooled has the opportunity to connect with family, parents, neighbors, friends, and members of the community. How much of that is happening in schools?

Parents are not qualified to teach

Oh excuse me! Parents are actually the most important teachers in their child’s life, and they always have been. The moment you become a parent you are equipped to teach your child (even if you don’t feel like it).

You may not be a trained teacher, but you know your child best. Your child’s academic success is not related to whether or not you are trained. In you, your children have the best teachers. They trust you and they know they have your support.

There are so many resources available for parents that not knowing a subject isn’t going to hold anyone back!

When it comes to homeschooling, the best thing to do is to know how you can be your child’s education champion – all without ever getting a teaching degree.

Homeschooling is just picking curriculum and teaching it

For many people, this is how they approach homeschooling because they understand the school system, where you have a curriculum and you learn.

But what if you were to know that choosing your curriculum isn’t the first thing to do? What if you knew that there are other really important aspects of homeschooling you need to know first?

There is so much more to homeschooling than just curriculum choice. It is not just about deciding to homeschool and then picking a curriculum. Too many do this and then are frustrated with the choice, largely because they are using what their friends use – and it is NOT right for them and their children.

Choosing curriculum with confidence is powerful. When you choose curriculum that is right for your child, it will save frustration and headaches. When you choose a curriculum that encourages you in teaching, it is freeing.

I teach about choosing curriculum in my How to Homeschool Course. You can check that out my online course here.

These are just 3 homeschooling myths. There are more. In the next post I will look at 3 others.

What are your feelings about these homeschool myths? Do you agree with my thoughts?
