Ice Cream In A Jar
Here is another fun thing you can make with your children. Who doesn’t love ice cream in summer? We love going out for it as a treat, but we also like making things, so here we get two birds with one stone. Your arms will also get a good workout! Ice Cream in a Jar for the win!
To be honest, we halved the recipe as it was more than enough for each girl to have some, and it was less time to shake. And we just used a pint sized mason jar.
INSTRUCTIONS
What you will need:
Large jar, like a 16 oz mason jar or something that is about 2 cups in size.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 c. heavy cream
- 1 1/2 tbsp. fine sugar
- 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
If you want chocolate add ½ – 1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder
What to do:
- Pour cream, sugar, vanilla and salt into a 16 ounce mason jar and secure the lid tightly! Shake the mason jar until the cream thickens and almost doubles in size,. That should take about 4 to 5 minutes. You don’t want it too runny. It should easily coat the back of a wooden spoon. (Or if you want to save time and energy, use your hand beaters or electric whisk to get the cream whipped up. It’s still fun.)
- Freeze for 3 hours, or until hardened. Scoop out ice cream with a spoon and serve! Try it with your favorite ice cream toppings.
SCIENCY THINGS ARE FUN
The reason I love making things like this with my girls is that we get to talk about sciency things like change of state. I always start by asking what they think will happen and why. We are not up to science fair style projects yet, but there are always great opportunities for deductive reasoning or critical thinking skill development. Ice Cream in a Jar gets us talking about changes of state – and how things can taste. The fact that it is ice cream makes learning fun – and me #1 Mom 🙂
