Memoria Press – Great Classical Education
Memoria Press is a publisher, so they have a range of resources – curriculum sets, lesson plans, literature guides, videos, instructionals – that cover grades Pre-K to 12th.
It is a classical, Christian homeschool curriculum that emphasizes traditional education, literature, the Great Books and high academic standards.
Not everyone is looking for a classical education curriculum, but if you are, Memoria Press has strong offerings and is highly recommended in the Classical Education Community.
Memoria Press is firm in their statement of “Saving Western Civilization One Student at a Time” and are clear that they “pass on the cultural heritage of the Christian West through the Great Books.” What are the Great Books? They are the books that are considered to be great because they are the foundation of Western Civilization’s intellectual, cultural, and spiritual framework. Memoria Press has 12 great Christian Novels and you can check those out on their website.
If you are wondering more about Classical Education, I have a post on this. It stands out in its style and features, compared to other styles of homeschooling or education.
KEY FEATURES OF MEMORIA PRESS
- The greatest strength is its classical education. It is based on the trivium (grammar, logic, and rhetoric), the curriculum provides a structured and systematic approach to learning.
- It has a Christian Worldview, and integrates this into the curriculum, emphasizing moral and spiritual development. They focus on Bible literacy, knowledge of church history, and developing a strong faith and Christian consciousness.
- Latin and Greek language programs are a core component of the curriculum.
- It is literature based learning, so literature is used as a primary tool for teaching subjects like history, science, and language arts. Classic literature is a foundation of this.
- As with classical education, it provides a systematic approach to learning. It has a clear and structured progression.
- It holds Rigorous Academic Standards. They believe in preparing students for college and beyond.
- Teaches critical thinking.
- Memoria Press has a strong online community. They have The Memoria Press Forum, where you can get answers to all your questions about classical education, get placement advice, troubleshoot specific difficulties, bounce ideas off veteran moms, get help directly from MP staff, and more. There are also Facebook groups you can join and a podcast.
TWO SPECIAL COMPONENTS
There are 2 components of Memoria Press that stand out to me.
They have their online academy, founded in 2006, that is accredited. This is for grades 3 to 12.
The other is “Simply Classical” and this is a program for children with educational support needs. You need to do an assessment to see what they recommend for your child. They have different levels – not your usual grade level curriculum. All levels are fully customizable. The heart is a slower pace with ample review. All levels are fully customizable. Memoria Press wants the rich, beautiful content of Classical Education being available to all. If you are wondering about whether a classical education would be right for your child with learning issues, I would encourage you to read the book “Simply Classical: A Beautiful Education for Any Child” by Cheryl Swope, who created and crafted this program.
COST OF MEMORIA PRESS
The cost is depending on the grade, but they range from around $235 (preschool) to $914 (9th grade). There are no complete packages for 10th-12th grades.
You can buy digital or print lesson plans (to go with the curriculum) and these range from $3 to $15 for digital and $4 to $16 for print.
There are also many great resources for each subject and opportunities to purchase what you need.
Keep in mind that these additional resources can quickly add up.
OTHER THOUGHTS AND MY OPINIONS
- This is a fully integrated Christian worldview curriculum. This will not align with everyone’s beliefs.
- It is very time intensive for parents. This is not an open-and-go curriculum. You have to really spend time reading the lesson plans and curriculum manuals, as well as the teacher guides. You will be actively involved in the teaching and supervision. I feel that the workload can be demanding for both parents and students. It might especially feel overwhelming in the early years as you find a groove.
- As with all classical education, this curriculum is structured and may not offer as much flexibility as some other options. But, this being said, you can choose select parts of the curriculum to use as you put together what is best for your family.
- Memoria Press does not write its own math curriculum, except for Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1. In the elementary years, they provide/use Rod and Staff. In the upper years, they make use of VideoText resources.
- I like that they have tested their curriculum in a brick and mortar school setting, so they are providing a curriculum that they have seen work first hand.
- They have The Classical Teacher catalog, where you can see the whole curriculum, as well as hearing from their experts on a range of topics including Latin, phonics, classical education, technology, virtue, and more.
- If you are emotionally invested in classical education, then Memoria Press is one of the strongest options out there, in my opinion. Their patent resources with the forum and articles are designed and written to set you up for success.
Check out Memoria Press and all they have to offer you. This just could be the right choice for you!
