MiAcademy – Pros and Cons. Is it good for you?
Miacademy is an online program for Kindergarten to 8th grade.
You can use Miacademy as your “main” homeschool curriculum, or as a supplement along with another curriculum. You can do both.
From their website:
MiAcademy and MiaPrep have earned supplemental education accreditation through the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACS-WASC). For some families it is important to have accreditation (though it is not necessary for homeschooling).
Mia also has “Always Icecream” and “Clever Dragons”, which are a girls site and a boys site – because they feel that when it comes to social interaction and expression through play and artwork, many children enjoy being in a “girls-only” or “boys-only” environment. They feel that this also allows for open discussion that would not happen in mixed-gender environments.
It offers subject wise Language arts, Math, Science and Social Studies as the core as well as numerous electives like music and art, world languages and life skills.
Although it offers both Christian and Jewish Bible Studies as optional, elective courses, Miacademy is a secular homeschooling program and its core courses, including science, are standards aligned and contain no religious material.
PROS OF MIACADEMY
- Adjusts to your child’s needs. As a parent you can set the grade level of each subject (you don’t have to do all 3rd grade, for example). You can even set what you want the passing grade to be.
- Engaging activities – video lessons along with online text, graphics and activities
- The parent portal allows you to assign and set lessons, as well as set what days your child will be learning. It also provides grades and days if you need to report those.
- Flexible – in that you can do MiaAcademy anywhere as long as you have an internet connection and you don’t have to do it at set times.
- When your children log in they will see their learning path for the day. They can easily get started and work at their own pace.
- There is a Mia Community your children can get involved in.
- Accredited
CONS OF MIACADEMY
- Is completely online, so you have greater screen time
- Tests and quizzes are required
- Automatically graded tests that can look for specific words and therefore grade your child wrong
- Cost might be high for some families – it is not the cheapest online option
- Graphics in the games are starting to look dated
COST
$36 a month (first month $1.99) or $360 for the year as a one-time payment.
They do offer lifetime plans of $840 for one child and $1880 for 4 children.
They do offer sibling discounts and financial aid.
OTHER THOUGHTS
- Being able to try it out for $2 for a month is great. This truly enables you to delve into what they have to offer and see if it will work for you.
- They also have MiaPrep, which is an online highschool. You can trial that for $9.95
- There is a complete scope and sequence for each subject that will help you see where your children should be learning.
- Some parents don’t feel that it is challenging enough and your child could breeze through the curriculum
- If you want to be more hands-off in your child’s learning – in that you don’t have to sit and teach them daily, this can be a good option for you.
- It caters for a wide range of learning abilities, including those with special needs through customization, text-to-speech, the option for repetition and closed captioning.
I can see why this program will appeal to families, especially those who want a flexible, customizable, hands-off option. It is worth taking the trial to look and see if it is something you could use with your children.
