My Father’s World – exploring this homeschool curriculum
My Father’s World is a homeschool curriculum that has been around since the early 2000s. If you are looking for a curriculum that combines Charlotte Mason ideas, classical education AND unit studies with a biblical focus and family centered, then this might just be the curriculum for you!
My Father’s World is a curriculum that covers from preschool to 12th grade. Each year centers around a single guide and uses a mixture of real books and hands-on activities along with a few textbooks. What makes it unique? According to their website:
My Father’s World is dedicated to raising up generations of families who see the world through God’s eyes and live according to that knowledge.
KEY FEATURES OF MY FATHER’S WORLD
- Strong Christian Worldview: MFW integrates a Christian worldview into all subjects, providing a biblical perspective on history, science, and literature, as well as music, art and geography
- Family-Friendly: The curriculum is designed to be used by families with multiple children of different ages, allowing for a cohesive (and potentially less stressful) learning experience.
- Structured Learning: MFW is a structured approach that follows a classical cycle. They are broken into the three sections of grammar (Discover), logic (Investigate), and rhetoric (Declare). There are also clear lesson plans and guides.
- Comprehensive coverage: MFW provides a comprehensive curriculum that covers all core subjects, including history, science, literature, math, and language arts. You can choose the premier package (which has all subjects) or the essentials package. Though it must be noted that math is an addition to the complete package.
- Hands-On Learning: This curriculum emphasizes hands-on activities, experiments, and projects to engage students.
- Less testing: MFW prioritizes rich learning experiences and thoughtful reflection over excessive testing. Most testing comes in the form of built-in review questions, practice pages, and an occasional cumulative assessment.
- All-in-one: Each year and package contains all you need (though math and language arts are an add-on but you can purchase it through MFW).
- Community and Support: MFW provides a supportive online community and resources for homeschooling families. They have Synergy Groups, which you can start or join (and they provide the resources). And they have an active social media presence.
COST OF MY FATHER’S WORLD
The cost of the packages vary depending on the grade. Math and Language Arts are required add-ons from 2nd grade and up.
I will give the full retail prices, though it needs to be stated that MFW offers regular discounts (depending on the time of year. They can vary from 15%-30% off.)
Prices range from $310 for Kindergarten ($332 for Pre-K) to $705 for 12th grade.
You can also add a coaching package for Declare (9th to 12th grade). The cost of these packages are $1207 to $1547.
You can use the same curriculum for multiple children (Investigate) so this can help with cost.
OTHER THOUGHTS AND MY OPINIONS
- The curriculum requires significant parental involvement, including reading aloud, leading discussions, and grading assignments. You will also need to plan ahead in order to have some of the resources you need.
- There are a lot of samples that you can look through to see if this curriculum is right for you. I always find that samples are extremely helpful. The scope and sequence will show you how it all fits together, especially if you have children that are going to work on the same cycle.
- From 2nd or 3rd grade, you can have siblings join in the Investigate Family Learning Cycle. (You can also do 2nd and 3rd grades independently.) Once your child completes 8th grade, they move into Declare. It is intended that highschool students complete their studies independently.
- There is no way to separate the Christian worldview from the curriculum. If you do not want a Christian curriculum then this is not one for you.
- MFW uses and relies on quality literature. They have trademarked “Book Basket” and this is a key aspect of the morning for Kindergarten to 8th grade. The books in the lists can be sourced from the library or 2nd-hand.
- For math they recommend Dimensions (the US version of Singapore Math) from 2nd grade to 6th grade. From 7th grade up they recommend Saxon math. You could, of course, use a different math curriculum.
- Language Arts pulls from different curricula for grammar and writing. Again, you can choose to have a different Language Arts curriculum, other than what they recommend.
