Imagine turning writing and reading into a thrilling adventure—with magical characters, creative quests, and no dull worksheets in sight. That’s the world of Night Zookeeper, an award-winning, gamified language arts platform designed to make literacy truly “fantastically fun” for kids.
Founded in 2012 by Joshua Davidson and Paul Hutson, Night Zookeeper began as a creative app for schools and has since grown into a comprehensive online program, book series, and even a TV mini-series—all built around inspiring imaginations and building writing confidence. It blends storytelling, interactive challenges, and personalized tutor feedback to help children ages 6–12 practice spelling, punctuation, reading comprehension, and creative writing—without it feeling like work
“Night Zookeeper brings together a compelling story, innovative digital technology, and effective curriculum-aligned educational content, to help your child boost their reading & writing skills.”
With its imaginative world, curriculum alignment, and dedication to creative learning, Night Zookeeper has become a trusted resource for homeschoolers.

KEY FEATURES OF NIGHT ZOOKEEPER
- Your children explore a magical “zoo at night,” completing missions and creative challenges that feel like a game rather than schoolwork. This playful approach helps kids stay motivated while still covering key literacy skills.
- Creative Writing with Tutor Feedback. Your kids will write stories, poems, and reports, which are then reviewed by a team of real tutors who give encouraging, personalized feedback. This helps build writing confidence while reinforcing grammar, spelling, and style.
- It is aligned to elementary literacy standards. The program blends imaginative storytelling with structured lessons in vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar, and punctuation
PROS OF NIGHT ZOOKEEPER
- The platform integrates writing with storytelling, games, and challenges tailored by age and skill level. This makes it educational and engaging.
- You can make it work as a complete Language Arts curriculum or a supplemental tool, giving flexibility depending on your needs.
- A user-friendly parent dashboard lets you assign tasks, monitor progress, and adjust difficulty.
- The platform is ad-free, includes moderated social features, anonymous avatars, and accessibility aids like audio captions and Easy Mode for younger or special-needs learners.
- Night Zookeeper has won several awards and recognitions for its educational value.
- It is actually effective for reluctant writers because it is fun.
- Your children are able to receive feedback and give feedback to others! Your kids can connect with others.
- There are projects your kids can get involved in. Night Zookeeper also takes submissions for their books.
- There are printables and worksheets, and even a complete language arts pack you can purchase.
CONS OF NIGHT ZOOKEEPER
- Your kids may need help navigating the platform at first, depending on their age.
- If you don’t set time limits your kids can spend a lot of time on the site as they can easily get lost in the fun world of the zoo.
- The magical theme might not suit all families with certain beliefs.
- Some kids will bypass writing by entering minimal input and go straight to games (my child tried doing this.) This will reduce the educational value.
- Children who prefer factual, pragmatic tasks over creative play may not be as engaged or benefit as much.
- It adjusts by age, and some parents want more control over game topics and difficulty.

MY THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS
We used Night Zookeeper for a year and my girls enjoyed the work. They loved getting the feedback from the tutors. I found the games to be engaging and the girls were learning from them.
My girls were able to dictate their stories into Night Zookeeper and then edit them for clarity and punctuation. This was helpful as it didn’t stifle their creativity. When they had to physically type them, their stories were short and minimal. When they could dictate, their stories were so much better.
It is a resource I have recommended many times to others as a supplement. I personally wouldn’t use it as a full curriculum, but I can see why some do.
Check out Night Zookeeper and see what it could do for your children.
