Parenting Plans: Happy New Year Goals

PARENTING GOALS

We all know that ending the year and starting a year is a good time to review and set goals.  I think we all start out with new year goals and the hope that we will achieve them. I believe in goals. They help us to move towards a target. But they do need to be SMART to be of the most benefit to us

Here is the video I did on setting smart goals.

MOVING TARGET

It is totally ok for your goals to be a moving target. Just as it is totally ok for you to not achieve your goals. Don’t hold on so tight to them that they end up discouraging you.

We had some lofty goals for the year that have yet to be met. I share them, and the stories attached, in the video above. What were our goals?

  • Have the girls sleep through the night…….ha. One is good, the other repeatedly says “I just love you too much Mummy for you to sleep without me.” Even the introduction of bunkbeds has not been enough to have this goal sufficiently met.
  • Start school in a slightly more formal way. I still lean towards unschooling but I wanted to introduce a few things a little more formally. “Trinational Academy for Powerful Girls” was formed and Kindergarten was launched. 5 weeks into it I realized that the girls were reading a lot further ahead than I was fully aware (educator fail!) and they were not really interested in handwriting (“I can always get someone else to do it for me”) until I allowed them to start writing the words they really wanted to write, like boobs, poop, bottom and fart. Now they are more interested in writing. We have met this goal in starting school, but it is definitely a moving target.
  • Controlling our emotions. This is also one that we haven’t really met. I will say that the outbursts are getting fewer and further apart, but we are all still learning (Mummy included!) We will continue with this goal this year.
