Is Adventure Academy Really Worth It?

If you’re searching for a fun and educational way to keep your kids engaged, you might have come across Adventure Academy. This is a program I have used with my girls as a supplement and some educational fun. Developed by the creators of ABCmouse, this online platform, released in 2019, is designed for children aged 8 to 13, offering a vast virtual world filled with learning activities. But does it live up to the hype?

Key Features of Adventure Academy

  • Adventure Academy immerses kids in a vibrant, MMO-style universe where they can explore various themed areas, such as the Science Wing and the Language Arts Tower. Players can customize their avatars, decorate virtual homes, and embark on quests that mix learning with adventure.
  • The platform covers a wide range of subjects, including math, reading, science, and social studies. Each area offers interactive lessons, puzzles, and videos, which gives a well-rounded educational experience.
  • Adventure Academy is accessible across various devices, including PCs, tablets, and smartphones. This flexibility allows children to continue their learning journey whether at home or on the go.
  • You can monitor your child’s progress through built-in tracking tools. And there are strong parental controls.

Pros of Adventure Academy

  • The immersive environment and interactive quests can captivate children’s attention, making learning enjoyable.
  • Over 40 curriculum experts have contributed to the writing of Adventure Academy, so they offer high-quality educational material across multiple subjects.
  • Adventure Academy provides a secure space for children to interact, with options to limit or disable in-game communication. They have outlined strong rules for how to behave online and will stop any children engaging in bullying, trolling or using bad language.
  • One subscription allows up to three children to use the platform simultaneously, making it cost-effective for families.

Cons of Adventure Academy

  • There are still some technical issues. There are reported glitches, such as disappearing furniture or challenges with saving in-game changes. Sometimes it takes a while to load.
  • As children progress, some users have noted a decrease in available quests and activities as advanced content, potentially leading to reduced engagement.
  • For children who need more structure, the freedom of the world may reduce focus on learning.
  • There isn’t a clear learning path (like with ABC Mouse), which allows freedom of learning, but kids can skip the learning parts.
  • It’s not a full curriculum. While academically sound, it’s better suited as a supplement rather than a standalone program.

Cost of Adventure Academy

The monthly fee of $12.99 or annual subscription of $79.99. There are often discounts made available. This is for up to 3 children in your family. You do not need to to have a separate account for each child.

My Thoughts and Opinions

Adventure Academy offers a dynamic and engaging platform for children to explore and learn across various subjects. While it boasts impressive features and a rich curriculum, you should be aware of the occasional technical challenges and the fact that it is a supplement – not a full curriculum. It serves well as a supplement.

If you are looking to supplement your child’s learning with something fun, interactive, and engaging, Adventure Academy is a strong option. It does a good job of supporting key concepts across core subjects. There is a curriculum overview available showing thousands of learning objectives across more than 100 thematic units.

However, if you’re looking for a complete curriculum then you will need to pair Adventure Academy with additional resources or choose a dedicated full curriculum.

My girls have used Adventure Academy over 2 different years. They enjoy it but it is treated as a game time, in which they happen to be learning. We don’t view it as a curriculum.

Looking for other supplement options? Here is a strong contender.
