Looking for some fun ways to teach numbers to your little one? I totally get it – it can feel a bit daunting, like where do you even start? But honestly, it’s super simple when you make it a game. You can easily teach numbers to kids with these 3 easy tricks!
COUNT EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING!
This first one is probably the easiest because you can do it anywhere, anytime. It’s all about integrating counting into your daily life.
You know, instead of just saying “let’s go,” try “Let’s count our steps to the door: one, two, three!” Or when you’re getting dressed, “How many socks do we have? One, two!” When you’re putting away toys, “Let’s put away five blocks: one, two, three, four, five!”
We even count fruit at the grocery store or cars passing by. The key here isn’t just saying the number words, but actually pointing to or touching each item as you count it. This helps them connect the number word to a specific quantity. It’s so casual, they don’t even realize they’re learning, and it makes numbers feel like a natural part of their world.
NUMBER SCAVENGER HUNTS
Just like with colors, scavenger hunts are fantastic for numbers! This gets them moving and actively looking for numbers in their environment.
Here’s how it works: You can start by asking them to find a specific number. “Can you find the number ‘1’ somewhere in the room?” You might point to a clock, a book page, or even a toy with a number on it. Once they find it, celebrate big!
As they get better, you can make it more challenging. “Can you find two blue cars?” or “Find three books on the shelf.” You can even draw numbers on sticky notes and hide them around the house, then have them find them in order (1, then 2, then 3). It turns learning into a fun little quest, and they get so excited when they spot a number they recognize.
This is also fun to do when you are out and about shopping. You can also go on walks to discover numbers.
HANDS-ON COUNTING AND SORTING
Kids learn best by doing, and this method uses things you probably already have lying around. It’s all about making numbers tangible. It is one of the easiest ways to teach numbers.
Gather up a bunch of small items – think LEGO bricks, pom-poms, buttons, small toy animals, even snacks like grapes or goldfish crackers! Then, you can do a few things:
- Count it out! Ask them to count out a specific number of items. “Can you give me three buttons?” Have them touch each one as they count.
- One-to-One Correspondence. This sounds fancy, but it just means helping them understand that each item gets one count. So, if you have five toy cars, put them in a line and have them touch each car as they say “one, two, three, four, five.”
- Comparing Quantities. Once they grasp basic counting, you can ask, “Which pile has more? Which pile has less?” This starts introducing early math concepts without any pressure.
Using these everyday objects makes numbers feel real and concrete, not just abstract symbols. And, hey, if you use snacks, it’s a built-in reward system!
